Wm. Henry Harrison ALS Re: Ohio Captain's Expenses in Recruitment
ALS

A holograph letter from future President William Henry Harrison referencing an Ohio captain's recruitment expenses during the War of 1812. 1p, measuring 8" x 8.75", Washington, D.C., March 3, 1820. Signed within the text as "Genl. Harrison" in the opening line. Exhibits light age toning, with minor paper loss at left side edge and tearing near folds. Isolated marking at lower right, not affecting text. Features restorative archival tape at folds of verso. Otherwise good condition with nice associations to Harrison's career in Ohio.

Reading in full:

"Genl. Harrison requests the favor of Mr. Ha- to furnish the information called for in the enclosed letter from the administrator of John H. Pi-.
He also wishes to know what is the state of Captain John Spencer's claim for reimbursement of certain expenses incurred in the recruiting service. Captn S. served in the 26th Reg/perhaps 27th & lives at Newark Licking County Ohio."

At the time this letter was written, Harrison was in the middle of his term as Senate member for Ohio's Hamilton County district. During the War of 1812, however, he notably served as Commander to the Army of the Northwest. Spencer's Company, active from August 27 to September 25, 1812 and again between September 4, 1813 and March 4, 1814, undoubtedly fell under his jurisdiction.
