Description:

Wm. H. Harrison Gives Provisions to the Potawatomi, Boldly Signed & Written 1795 ADS

A document granting food provisions to the Potawatomi Nation, handwritten and signed by future President William Henry Harrison (1773-1841) as aide-de-camp. 1p, measuring 7.25" x 2.25" (visible), dated July 3, 1795, Greenville [Ohio]. The body of the text reads in full: "For the Potawatomis forty five pounds of beef & flour./ Wm. H. Harrison/ A.D.C.". This interaction with the Potawatomi Nation came just one month before the signing of the Treaty of Greenville, which ended the Northwest Indian War (1785-1795) that threatened their control over the region. Attractively matted and displayed with a black and white portrait of Harrison to the overall size of 13.75" x 20". Expected surface toning, with areas of flattened creasing and light staining; small puncture hole present at middle, not affecting text. Document not examined outside of frame. A near fine example.

After joining the Army in 1791 under the First American Regiment, William Henry Harrison was promoted a year later to lieutenant under Major General Anthony Wayne. A year later, he would become Wayne's aide-de-camp, where he participated in the 1794 Battle of Fallen Timbers which ended the Northwest Indian War. The conclusion of the War saw the subsequent drafting of the Treaty of Greenville, to which Harrison would become a signatory. Under its terms, a coalition of twelve indigenous tribes ceded a portion of their lands to the federal government, opening two-thirds of Ohio to settlement.

Harrison would again come in contact with the Potawatomi people around the year 1809, this time serving as Indiana territorial governor. During this period, his primary responsibility was to obtain titles to tribal lands that would allow future settlement and increase the territory's population, a requirement for statehood. He was also eager to expand the territory for personal reasons, as his political fortunes were tied to Indiana's eventual statehood. Indeed, the 1809 Treaty of Fort Wayne saw negotiations between Harrison and the Potawatomi (among other Nations) in which he obtained nearly 30 million acres of land.

The Potawatomi were later forcefully relocated from the state of Indiana in 1838 to what is now eastern Kansas, during which time upwards of 40 people died. The event has been later dubbed the Trail of Death, and was declared a Regional Historical Trail in the mid-1990s.
