Archive

A collection of three signed letters from notable military heroes Richard "Dick" Winters, Anthony "Nuts" McAuliffe, and Norman Schwarzkopf Sr. Consisting of (2) TLS and (1) ALS, each measuring 8.5" x 11". Varying places and dates, ca. 1945-1950. Exhibits degrees of expected creasing, letter folds, and light toning throughout. The left margin of Schwarzkopf's letter has been 3-hole punched. Slight feathering to McAuliffe's signature. Otherwise, very good. Please see below for additional information on contents.

The lot includes:

1.) ALS from Richard "Dick" Winters of Easy Company and "Band of Brothers" fame. 1p on personal stationary, n.p., undated. Penned in black felt tip and signed at conclusion as "Dick", he references Iwo Jima and famed author Richard Wheeler. Reading in part: "I encourage you to continue to read, read, read military history… I am keeping your cards on 'Iwo'. I have a friend and author who was wounded on the 2nd Day- Richard Wheeler- author of about a dozen books on 'Iwo.'"

2.) TLS from General Anthony C. "Nuts" McAuliffe to autograph collector Ashley T. Cole. 1p on Department of the Army letterhead, Washington, D.C., June 22, 1950. Signed in blue fountain pen as "A. McAuliffe", he answers an inquiry regarding Colonel Raymond Millener of the 101st Airborne Division. Reading in part: "Colonel Millener is dead. A brilliant and able chief of staff, he wore himself out in Normandy and Holland. After some rest… he returned to duty and appeared to be in fine health. Then one morning in early December 1944, he committed suicide in the little house at our rest camp near Reims… Millener won the DSC in Normandy and was brilliant and able in every respect. We missed him during the Battle of the Bulge. He was replaced by Colonel Ned Moore, who is now on duty at MacArthur's headquarters in Tokyo."

3.) TLS from Colonel Norman Schwarzkopf to Captain Kellogg Sloan of New Jersey. 1p, New York, NY, February 12, 1945. Signed at conclusion in black fountain pen as "H. Norman Schwarzkopf", he references his current mission in Iran. Reading in part: "Yes we are over here in Persia and have been for about two and a half years… We have been assigned the job of reorganizing the Gendarmerie and in view of the international importance of security… you can well realize that a good Gendarmerie is highly essential. Of course we have run into a number of difficulties, such as the language difficulties, the oriental customs and habits, local traditions and influences, extremes of every kind and international implications… Our mission here is entirely a military mission and all our personnel comes directly from the Army…."
