Winston Churchill War-Dated TLS to Editor of WWII Tribute Anthology, Inspiration for British Resistance Against Germany!
TLS
A typed letter from Prime Minister Winston Churchill to writer Derek Tangye (1912-1996), editor of a 1942 anthology which paid tribute to the people who had lost their lives in the midst of World War II. 1p, 7.25" x 9", London, England, April 27, 1943. Signed at the conclusion as "Winston Churchill", Tangye's book was notably circulated before U.S. troops were sent to Europe. Features scattered handling marks and uneven surface toning throughout; small crease present to upper left. Otherwise very good condition, marking an important turning point in England's fight against the Axis.

In full:

"It was very good of you to think of sending me a special copy of 'Went the Day Well', which you have edited.
I have had an opportunity during the Easter weekend to look through part of the book, and am very much obliged to you for it."

Published in 1942 before the US entered the war, Derek Tangye's book was a collection of essays by various contributors paying tribute to men and women from many services and countries. Written by both distinguished authors and ordinary civilians, the stories celebrated people who died doing their duty, expecting neither reward nor recognition. The book was later reissued in 1995 for the 50th anniversary of VE Day. Not to be confused with the 1942 film of the same name, the titles reference a famous epitaph by John Maxwell Edmonds which reads: "Went the day well?/ We died and never knew./ But, well or ill,/ Freedom, we died for you."
