Description:

A great, exhibitable one-page Winston Churchill letter with association to Prime Minister Arthur Balfour

WINSTON CHURCHILL (1874-1965) Typed Letter Signed, "Winston S. Churchill," as Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1 page, 7.5" x 9.5" on blind stamped Treasury Chambers letterhead, Whitehall, August 24, 1928, thanking a contributor to a fund established to benefit the aging Arthur Balfour (1848-1930). Expected folds, light soiling, else fine.

Marked "Confidential," Churchill writes n full, adding the recipients' name, "Falle," in the salutation, "The subscription list to the Balfour Testimonial Fund being now closed, I feel that you, who so kindly subscribed to that fund, will like to know ho much was subscribed and to what purpose it has been put. The total amount received rom members of both Houses of Parliament as £4,918.6.6. The car has been paid for and the balance has been handed to Lord Balfour to be used for his personal benefit in any way he may think fit. I may add that I have received form him a letter expressing his grateful thanks to the subscribers and his pleasure that their gift should have taken the form of a motor car. Please do not dream of acknowledging this communication."

Churchill had been acquainted with Balfour since the 1890s and the elder statesman would prove instrumental in helping him rise in British political life. Sadly, Balfour would get little enjoyment from the gift as his health was in rapid decline. He would die only two years later.
