Lord Randolph Henry Spencer Churchill (1849-1895) was a British politician and statesman. He was the third son of the 7th Duke of Marlborough. An influential figure in the Conservative Party, Churchill was a Tory radical. In 1886, at the age of 37, he became Chancellor of the Exchequer - the youngest to hold the office in over a hundred years. Churchill seemed certain to be prime minister in due course, but his own miscalculation ended his political career, and in less than six months, he resigned from the Cabinet and never held high office again.

Winston Churchill revered his father as a great statesman. His biographical work was heavily focused on Lord Randolph's career in parliament after 1880. Though Churchill was criticized by some for overplaying his father's accomplishments, his writings were well received.
