Description:

Winfield Scott & Winfield Scott Hancock Pair of Displays Featuring Original Photos & Autographs

Two framed displays relating to two of the most memorable American military commanders of the nineteenth century: Winfield Scott (1786-1866) and his namesake Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886).

The lot is comprised of:

1. A handsome display devoted to Winfield Scott, including his signature as "Winfield Scott" on a lined paper fragment at lower right, and an original carte de visite of Scott after Mathew Brady, ca. 1861, displayed at upper right. The sepia-toned carte de visite is entitled "Lt. Gen'l Winfield Scott" and depicts the physically imposing general in full military dress seated outdoors, possibly at West Point. The display also includes a high-quality photo reproduction image of Scott at upper left and an engraved biographical plaque at lower right. Matted and framed though missing glass, with expected wear and scuffs to the frame. Not examined out of the frame. Overall framed measures: 17.5" x 12.5" x .875."

2. A smaller display dedicated to Winfield Scott Hancock, including his signature as "Maj. Gl. Hancock" on the signature line of a promissory note dated December 28, 1876 also co-signed by his wife Almira Russell Hancock (1832-1893) and mother-in-law Adaline Russell (1814-1884). Displayed above is an original cabinet card photograph of an older Hancock, inscribed but not signed with his name at bottom, and mostly matted out. The last item is a high-quality photo reproduction image of Hancock advertising a late nineteenth-century Baltimore tobacco company at upper right. Matted and framed behind glass, with expected minor dents and dings. Not examined out of the frame. Overall framed measures: 11.75" x 14.5" x 1."

Winfield Scott, during his 53-year-long career in the U.S. military, saw action in the War of 1812, the Seminole Wars, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War.

Winfield Scott Hancock would serve over 40 years in the U.S. Army, from the Mexican-American War to the Indian Wars of the 1880s. Hancock's leadership at major Civil War battles like Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Cold Mountain established his place on the national stage.
