Winfield Scott (1786-1866) forged a formidable reputation as a military commander, having seen action in the War of 1812, the Seminole Wars, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War. Due to his strict adherence to military etiquette, he gained the nickname "Old Fuss and Feathers." In 1852, Scott became the Whig Party's presidential nominee but was defeated by Franklin Pierce. Scott continued his duties as senior officer of the army during the Pierce administration but frequently clashed with Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis, over trivial issues such as travel expenses.
