Description:

Winfield Scott, Civil War General, Tintype in Decorative Case

Quarter plate tintype of a seated Winfield Scott with officers standing on either side of him, all in uniform, 4.25” x 3.25”, no place, circa 1861-1865. Metal frame is marked “Worcester Mass. No. 26 / Dean & Emerson Patent Applied For”. Housed in a wooden case covered with embossed dark brown leather. Decorative red velvet cover pad protects the glass cover of tintype. Two functional brass hook and eye clasps keep the case firmly closed. Darkening to image with a few light touches of coloring. Expected surface imperfections, folds and creases, else very good condition.

The tintype was invented in the 1850s and was most popular during the Civil War due to its low cost and durability. During the photographic process, an emulsion was applied directly to a thin sheet of iron (not tin!) coated with a dark lacquer or enamel, which produced a unique positive image.

Winfield Scott (1786-1866) was an American military commander and political candidate. He served as a general in the United States Army from 1814 to 1861, taking part in the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the early stages of the American Civil War, and conflicts with Native Americans. Scott was the Whig Party's presidential nominee in the 1852 election but was defeated by Democrat Franklin Pierce. He was known as “Old Fuss and Feathers” for his insistence on proper military etiquette, as well as the “Grand Old Man of the Army” for his many years of service.
