On October 8, 1849 from New York, Winfield Scott penned this 2pp letter to Columbia University professor John McVickar. "The interest that you take in the family of the late ? Tisdale; long thought worthily connected with the Engineer Department of the Army does honour [sic] to your Christian heart, + I am happy to learn that, by your help, Sir his daughters are about to open a female School at Ting-Ting", Scott wrote. He then assured McVickar that he was willing to serve as a reference for Tisdale's daughters.

Legendary military commander Winfield Scott saw action the War of 1812, the Seminole Wars, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War. During his 53-year-long career in the U.S. military, Scott forged a reputation for reliable and firm command. Scott witnessed, experienced, and participated in many major military events of American history: he was a British prisoner of war in 1812; he supervised the forced removal of the Cherokee; he served as military governor of Mexico City; and he implemented the highly successful blockade of Southern port cities. A year prior to writing this letter, Scott had just been passed over (for the second time) as the Whig nominated presidential candidate.

John McVickar (1787-1868) was a professor of Political Economy, Moral Philosophy, and Rhetoric at "Columbia College", where he had taught since 1817. (Indeed, McVickar would teach here until 1857.)
