"In reply to your favor of this date I regret that as we have no Cavalry here I cannot comply with your request for the sabers. There is a Company of Artillery at Fort Hamilton and perhaps the Commanding Officer there can supply them…P.S. I would be happy to further your views if I had time. W.S.H."

Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886) was a career military officer, serving with distinction in the U.S. Army for four decades, including service in the Mexican–American War and the Civil War. He made a name for himself for his leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg, in particular defending Cemetery Ridge which bore the brunt of Pickett's Charge. His military service continued after the Civil War, as Hancock participated in the military Reconstruction of the South and the Army's presence at the Western frontier. In 1880, he became the Democratic nominee for president but lost the election to James A. Garfield. He was then elected president of the National Rifle Association in 1881 and served as commander-in-chief of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States Veterans Organization from 1879 until his death in 1886.
