Winfield S. Edgerly Archive with Wounded Knee Telegram & Over 31 Photos, Ca. 1890-1921

A fantastic archive pertaining to Brigadier General Winfield Scott Edgerly, dating from Ca. 1890 to 1921, with over thirty photographs, multiple printed documents and typed letters, and a telegram regarding fighting Native Americans. Winfield S. Edgerly (1846-1927) graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1866 and was appointed Second Lieutenant, Company D, of the 7th Cavalry. During Reconstruction, he was stationed at various posts in the South, such as Forts Riley and Snelling. In 1876, Edgerly joined the Sioux expedition that set off from Fort Abraham Lincoln and participated in the Little Big Horn River fight. His service there led to his promotion to First Lieutenant.

Edgerly continued to serve on the frontier and later fought at Wounded Knee Creek (December 29, 1890), commanding Company G of the 7th Cavalry. In 1899, he was transferred to Cuba as part of the Spanish-American War and moved to the Philippine Islands in 1903. Edgerly briefly saw service in World War I, commanding a mobilization camp at Concord, NH, from July to September 1917. This would be his last active service. He passed away on September 10, 1927, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Highlights from the archive include:

Wounded Knee Telegram. Pine Ridge, South Dakota, dated December 30, 1890. Signed "Winfield" and addressed to his wife, the telegram reads: "Had fight with Indians today 'G' troop all right side up."

"Annual Report of Brig. Gen. W.S. Edgerly, Commanding the Department of Luzon, 1905". Manila, dated June 30, 1905.

Typed Letter Signed "HC Corbin". Manila, dated January 31, 1905. Addressed to the Military Secretary at the War Department, recommending an appointment for Edgerly.

New Hampshire Appointment. Concord, New Hampshire, dated June 1, 1921. Appointing Gen. Edgerly to be a member of the Military Board.

Personal Photographs (31). A variety of thirty-one total photographs, ranging from cabinet cards (10), tintypes (5), a postcard, a carte de visite, etc. Many date from Edgerly's service in the Philippine Islands and include images of his unit in camp, the streets of San Fernando, and him training upon his horse. Along with multiple family group shots and studio portraits.

All of the images and documents are housed in archival sleeves within a black binder, save for an oversized matted image of Edgerly and his unit. Varying degrees of toning, soiling, wear, etc. The telegram regarding Wounded Knee has light toning, with an area of staining at the top. Overall, very good. Please refer to the photographs included for further details on the condition.
