William Taft TLS slamming Roosevelt and The Progressive Party

Single page TLS on William Taft's personal letterhead, 6.75" x 9". Dated "November 16th, 1914" and signed by William Howard Taft with a large bold signature as "Wm H Taft". Near fine with single center fold.

What a difference a few years makes! Taft took on the role of secretary of war in the administration of Theodore Roosevelt, but threw his support to the Ohioan as his successor in 1908. The Presidential election of 1908 had William H. Taft run for office as a Republican, while Theodore Roosevelt run for office as a member of the Progressive party, nicknamed the "Bull Moose Party". The candidacy of these two men led to a split in the Republican voter base. The split allowed the less popular Democratic party to win the election of 1912. Taft was generally more conservative than Roosevelt, however he also lacked his expansive view of presidential power, and was generally a more successful administrator than politician.

This revealing letter has Taft reflect on The Progressive party, slamming Roosevelt in the process:

"The result of the election was most gratifying, however. The elimination of Roosevelt and the Progressives seems to be complete, except in California, and there they need a little more hard times and a fool-killer among the Republicans …"

Not your ordinary letter covering the politics of two men who were once working under the same administration. A most unique TLS by Taft.
