John H. Small & Sons was a florist and pioneer in floral decoration, playing a significant role in shaping the floral industry. They began operations in the 1870s when they opened their first store in Washington, D.C. Known for their innovative approach to floral design, John H. Small & Sons set new standards for creativity and craftsmanship and quickly became a trusted business. Looking at local newspapers from the time, it is possible that Sherman purchased flowers for his 22-year-old daughter Rachel, who was attending some of the last receptions of the 1883 season.
