Zebulon Butler (1731-1795) was an American military officer and politician from Connecticut who served with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He also represented the Wyoming Valley (now in northeast Pennsylvania) in the Connecticut Assembly. He is most famously remembered for his involvement at the Battle of Wyoming, also known as the Wyoming Massacre, where he was soundly defeated a superior force of Loyalists and Iroquois. Nearly 300 Patriot casualties occurred, with many being killed by Native warriors after fleeing the battlefield.

It is possible that the author of this letter is William Stewart, who was hired as an overseer to work at Mount Vernon between 1794 to 1797. George Washington described Stewart as someone who "appears to me to understand the business of a farm very well, and seems attentive to it."
