William Shatner Handwritten Essay Signed "Capt. Kirk - Proud Jew"
AMS
William Shatner (b.1931). Autograph Manuscript Signed, "William Shatner / Capt. Kirk - Proud Jew", 1p, on his embossed personal stationery, 7.25" x 10.5", no place, no date. Entitled "Some Hanukkah Memories", Shatner describes his childhood memories of growing up Jewish. In near fine condition.

In full:
"First of all I want to say I recently released a Holiday Album - I was going to do 'Dreidel Dreidel' but I thought better of it - I mean I should have, maybe. I was born in the Notre-Dame-de-Grace neigborhood of Montreal, Quebec Canada to a Conservative Jewish household. My Paternal Grandfather 'Wolfe Schattner' anglicized the family name to Shatner. All four of my grandparents were immigrants from the Austria-Hungary and Russian Empires (from locations of present day Ukraine and Lithuania). Third, during my childhood, the menorah was silver and black no matter how much it was polished. It was something that sat somewhere on the mantelpiece all year long until it was used, and it was used with great reverance. Fourth, my mother standing over the frying pan, putting a mixture of potatoes - sound of potatoes into the sizzling fat - the oil - and frying potato pancakes - the memory of potato pancakes and applesauce and the family all around having pancakes is indelible. Happy Hanukkah".
