Description:

William Shakespeare's "Henry V" 12 Pages from the Third Folio, 1664

A group of twelve pages from "The Life of King Henry the Fifth", taken from the Third Folio edition of "Mr. William Shakespeare's Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies". Six leaves, 12pp, measuring 8.5" x 13", [London], [1664]. The group consists of pages 407-408, 415-422, 427, and 433 from the play, published by Philip Chetwinde in 1664. The pages include Henry's Salic Law speech (Act 1, Scene 2), Henry at Harfleur's gat (Act 3, Scene 3), Katherine and Alice practicing English (Act 3, Scene 4), Henry's monologue the night before the battle (Act 4, Scene 1), and part of the famous St. Crispin's Day speech (Act 4, Scene 3). The pages are toned, with foxing and dampstaining throughout. Large inkspot on final leaf. Worn and creased corners, with some minor chipping. Overall, very good.

Shakespeare's "Henry V" is believed to have been written sometime around 1599 and tells the story of King Henry V of England, focusing on events immediately before and after the Battle of Agincourt (1415) during the Hundred Years' War. The play is the final part of a tetralogy, preceded by Richard II, Henry IV, Part 1, and Henry IV, Part 2. The first quarto (Q1) entitled "The Cronicle History of Henry the fift" was printed in 1600 as a "bad quarto", or a shortened version of the play. A second quarto, a reprint of Q1, was published in 1602 by bookseller Thomas Pavier; another reprint was issued as Q3 in 1619, with a false date of 1608—part of William Jaggard's False Folio. The superior text, entitled "The Life of Henry the Fifth", was first printed in the First Folio in 1623. The Second Folio was published in 1632 with updated language, followed some thirty years later by the Third Folio.
