William Pepperrell Signed Accounting Record, 1 Year Prior to 1745 Expedition

1p, measuring 12.25" x 7.625", York, dated March 1, 1744. A handwritten record of accounts signed "Wm Pepperrell", documenting payments made by Peter Addams to Pepperrell from July 1739 to April 1741. Payments were made in bushels of corn, and there is an additional listed column of contraband. Pepperrell signed the document at the conclusion, with a statement reading, "This day the above named Wm Pepperrell personally appeared & made Oath to the truth of the above Acct. & that there is Justly due to him from the above named Peter Addams Twenty Six pounds & five shillings…Before me Rich. Cutti Jc Peace." Docketing on verso with a red wax seal. The document has flattened folds, repaired with archival material on verso. Light toning with soiling and foxing throughout. Large and bold signature.

Sir William Pepperrell, 1st Baronet (1696-1759) was a merchant, soldier, and slaveholder who settled in colonial Massachusetts. Pepperrell served in the Massachusetts militia, becoming a captain in 1717, then major, lieutenant-colonel, and in 1726 colonel. He also served in the Massachusetts General Court, and although he had not been formally trained as a lawyer, he was made chief justice of the Court of Common Pleas, serving from 1730 until his death. Pepperrell is best known for organizing, financing, and leading the 1745 expedition and siege of Louisbourg during King George's War.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
