William Penn grants land to the founder of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

Partly-printed Document Signed, "Wm Penn," 1 page, 27.5" x 21" on parchment, [London,] September 8, 1681, completed in manuscript, an indenture for 500 acres of land in Pennsylvania to Francis Smith. Moderate toning, several holes at fold intersections affect text, with intact wax seal affixed at bottom, overall very good.

Francis Smith's (c. 1637-c 1710) 500 acre tract lay in Bethel Township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The following day, Smith sold off 150 acres to his son-in-law Robert Eyre who became an important early settler of Bethel. Francis Smith received other grants from Penns and founded the town of Kennett Square in 1686.
