William Osler (1849-1919) was born in Canada West (now Ontario) and graduated from McGill University with a medical degree in 1872. After additional training in Europe, he joined the McGill University medical faculty in 1874. Ten years later, he joined the medical faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1889, he became the first Physician-in-Chief at the new Johns Hopkins Hospital. In 1893, he was one of the four founding professors of John Hopkins School of Medicine. In 1905, he received an appointment to the Regius Chair of Medicine at Oxford University, a position he held until his death. In 1907, he initiated the founding of the Association of Physicians and served as senior editor of its Quarterly Journal of Medicine. In 1911, he was named a baronet for his contributions to medicine. As a professor, Osler created the first residency program for the specialized training of physicians

 

J. Bayard Henry (1857-1926) was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Princeton University in 1876. He read law and began a practice in Philadelphia. He served in the Pennsylvania Senate from 1899 to 1902, and also served as a trustee of Princeton University.
