Description:

Osler, M.D. William 1849 - 1919 William Osler, and Dr. Weber reflect on the work of Dr. Storer

Single page letter, 7.75" x 6", dated "June 30th, 1911" on letterhead "13, Norham Gardens, Oxford". Written to Dr. Storer and signed by William Osler as "Wm Osler". Expected folds, slight age toning, else near fine.

A revealing letter written by Osler, reflecting upon a conversation he had with Dr. Park Weber, the leading dermatologist in London. The two apparently were discussing the writings, and work of Dr. H.R. Storer, who as a professor at Harvard medical school. Both Osler, Weber and Storer were research physicians, and all were active in writing, contributing and publishing articles in addition to practicing medicine. Osler created the first residency program for specialty training of physicians, and he was the first to bring medical students out of the lecture hall for bedside clinical training. Weber contributed over 1200 medical articles and wrote 23 books over a period of 50 years and discovered and wrote about new and unique dermatological conditions, and Storer's forefront belief that life begins at conception and not at "quickening", championed the pro-life movement.

In Osler's letter to Dr. Storer he notes "Young Parkes Weber was dining with me last night at the Athenaeum, and we were talking of you and your work. He is very urgent that you should complete your great book - that you are the only one that could do it thoroughly and well"

Perhaps the three men held a common belief on fetal development, or perhaps the three simply respected each one's role in challenging medicine and the common philosophies during their era. The letter is not clear on this point, however what is clear is the admiration they must have held for each other's work.
