McKinley William 1843 - 1901 William McKinley signs a sympathy letter to the Queen of Spain less than a year before the Spanish-American War began

Typed document on Executive Mansion letterhead. Two page document conjoined, with one typed page, the balance left blank. Docketed on verso. Dated "August 31, 1897", and signed by William McKinley as "William McKinley". 8" x 10" Expected folds, near fine.

A lovely typed signed document authorizing the Secretary Of State to "to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to the envelope containing my letter to Her Majesty the Queen Regent of Spain touching the death of the Infanta Dona Maria Luisa Feranda, Duchess of Montpensier" and signed by William McKinley.

Infanta Mar_a Luisa Fernanda of Spain, Duchess of Montpensier died at age 65, and was the youngest daughter of King Ferdinand VII of Spain. When her elder sister Isabella II of Spain succeeded to the throne, Infanta Luisa Fernanda was heiress-presumptive to the crown between 1833 and 1851, a position that ceased when Isabella's oldest surviving daughter was born. A volatile period, this document was signed less that a year before the Spanish-American War in which America ultimately gained Guam, Puerto Rico and The Philippines and was able to give Cuba its independence from Spain.
