William McKinley Signed Ohio State Certificate of Indebtedness

Single page document as a Certificate of Indebtedness, State of Ohio, for the amount of "$1,000," as Document "No.84" boldly signed by William McKinley as "W McKinley," Governor of Ohio, 14.5" x 9." Dated "May 12, 1894."  Countersigned by the Secretary of State of Ohio, Samuel Taylor, and the Auditor of State and President of the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund of Ohio. Clean, bright document with small paper pulls to verso along outer edge with one tiny piece missing from left edge. Verso with docketed assignment. Lovely strong vibrant signatures.

A revealing State of Ohio document. Ohio was issuing certificates of Indebtedness in 1894 to "meet Deficiencies in the General Revenue Fund" passed "April 25, 1894." The certificates were transferrable and redeemable on the first day of July 1896, at the agency of the State in the city of New York, with interest from the date herof, at the rare of three per centum (3%) per annum ….

McKinley was elected Governor of Ohio in 1891 by only 21,000 votes after making approximately 130 speeches in most of the state's 88 counties. He initiated relief efforts for the state's poor during the depression and Panic of 1893 and was reelected by 81,000 votes.

A wonderful example with a large bold signature by McKinley. We see another similar such example for sale on the internet listed for over $3500.
