McKinley William

William McKinley Lovely Signed Letter

Single page type letter signed, 5.5" x 8.5", on letterhead of William McKinley, Canton Ohio. Dated 'July 2, 1896", and boldly signed by William McKinley with a large four inch signature as "W Mc Kinley".  Original mailing envelope present, 6.5' x 3.75", torn open along the left edge, and top. Letter in near fine condition with expected folds, envelope is overall grubby.

An outstanding example of McKinley's signature. The letter was written one year before his Presidential term. McKinley was grateful for the letter of congratulations "of the 22nd ultimo", and thanked him for remembering him.

The term 'ultimo" references an event that happened in the prior month. Given McKinley was campaigning throughout 1896 this letter quite possibility was a reflection on the campaign. The 1896 presidential election was often seen as a realigning election, in which McKinley's view of a stronger central government building American industry through protective tariffs and a dollar based on gold triumphed.

Will B. Smith served in the Civil War in Company k, 14th Illinois' Volunteer Infantry.
