Lieutenant Commander William Henry Harrison signed a quartermaster's receipt for "Clothing for a Detachment of Troops belonging to the Garrison of Fort Washington" on April 12, 1797. The receipt features a neatly drawn table above an itemized list of hats, shoes, blankets, epaulets, and stocks and clasps distributed to Fort Washington troops. In addition, the number of coats, vests, shirts, and linen overalls used by rank is also recorded.

Teenaged ensign William Henry Harrison gained his first military experience at Fort Washington (present day Cincinnati) in the Northwest Territory after quitting his medical training. Harrison was promoted to lieutenant in 1792, and worked closely with Anthony "Mad Anthony" Wayne (1745-1796) during the duration of the Northwest Indian War. After the Americans defeated native forces in 1795, immigration to the region increased. Harrison's troops, here provisioned with clothing, armaments, and bedding, continued to monitor this important geopolitical crossroads in the spring of 1797. Ohio entered the Union in 1803.
