Description:

William H. Taft Signed Appointment of Postmaster in Logan, IA; PSA Authenticated

Partial printed DS, measuring 15.5" x 12.5", dated March 2, 1910, Washington, D.C. A document appointing one James H. Johnson "Postmaster at Logan, in the County of Harrison, State of Iowa… according to the laws of the United States and the regulations of the Post Office Department…". Boldly signed "Wm H Taft" in bottom right corner and countersigned by Postmaster General Frank H. Hitchcock. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA verifying the former president's signature as authentic. Minor smudging to "f" in "Taft", with expected degrees of toning, folding, and creasing throughout. Overall, very good with bold signatures from both!

William Howard Taft (1857-1930) was the 27th president of the United States and later served as tenth chief justice, the only person to have held both offices. Taft was elected president in 1908, the chosen successor of Theodore Roosevelt, but was defeated for reelection in 1912 by Woodrow Wilson. In 1921, President Warren G. Harding appointed Taft to be chief justice, a position he held until a month before his death.

Frank Harris Hitchcock (1867-1935) served as chairman of the Republican National Committee between 1908 and 1909, and was appointed under President Taft as Postmaster General. He is widely credited as having established the first U.S. airmail service after the swearing-in of aviator Earle Ovington as "Official Air Mail Pilot" in 1911.
