William H. Taft ALS to St. Louis Editor, "I am very sorry I made such a ragged speech", Ex-Forbes
ALS

William Howard Taft (1857-1930). Autograph Letter Signed, "WmHTaft", in pencil, 3pp on his bifold personal stationery, 4.875" x 7.875", New Haven, Connecticut, August 17, 1915. Expected mailing folds and creases. Separation at fold intersection and central vertical fold. Moderate smearing which does not affect legibility of text. Isolated foxing. In very good condition. Ex-Steve Forbes Collection.

Taft writes while traveling by train, adding "Approaching Denver" above the date, so begins his letter to Globe-Democrat editorial writer Henry P. Robbins by apologizing for his handwriting.
In full:

"You must pardon this scrawl but I have no facilities but these on the train. I write to express my appreciation of the words of your editorial in the Globe Democrat. You remember Richelieu in the play in praising De Mauprat to Julie de Mortimer said that he like him because when the Cardinal's play was given before the Court of Louis the XIII, he had applauded 'in the right places'. There is nothing quite so discouraging as applause with discrimination, and when by contrast one hears emphasis where he would like to have it put, it is sweetly gratifying and flattering and strongly commends the judgment of the Daniel who speaks.

I have sent the editorial to my wife who is travelling on parallel lines with me to the Coast with the Canadian boundary between us. You will make her woman's heart rejoice. Of course she is an impartial judge and severe critic. My welcome at St. Louis was most gratifying. I am very sorry I made such a ragged speech - what great speeches one makes in his mind after the event by filling in what he forgot? With the hope that our paths may often cross and with sincere expression of my grateful appreciation..."
