William "Grumble" Jones & John P. Hatch DS For Provisions at Fort Merrill
DS

A manuscript document of provision returns signed by future Civil War adversaries John Porter Hatch (1822-1901) and William E. "Grumble" Jones (1824-1864) while they were stationed in Texas. 1p, measuring 8" x 9.75", Fort Merrill, Texas, September 1852. Signed near the center right, "J. P. Hatch" as Mounted Riflemen Commander and countersigned "W. E. Jones" as Second Lieutenant. The document lists rations of hard bread, bacon, beans, coffee, and other provisions for the period of September 21-23, 1852. Exhibits faint spot staining and creasing throughout. Uneven cut to left side margin. Isolated paper loss to lower right corner, not affecting text. Else, very good.

Earlier that year, a recently widowed Jones arrived at Fort Merrill, located along the Nueces River. It had been founded in March 1850 to protect settlers from Comanche raids. His company, led by John Hatch, were garrisoned there until April 1853 when they were transferred to Fort Ewell. In 1854, Jones received a promotion to first lieutenant, but resigned his commission in 1857 and joined the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. Later, at the Battle of Piedmont on June 5, 1864, the Brigadier General was fatally shot while leading a cavalry charge. Hatch would survive the war, but was seriously wounded at the Battle of South Mountain, for which he received the Medal of Honor.
