William Gladstone ALS as MP, Regarding a Claim to Machinery & Mortgage

4pp of a bifolium, measuring 4.25" x 7", London, dated April 2, 1849. A letter written from 6 Carlton Gardens, signed "WE Gladstone" and addressed to J. Griffiths Esq. Gladstone provides his upcoming travel schedule and plans a meeting to discuss a claim concerning machinery and a mortgage. With flattened mail folds, light toning, and soiling. Boldly signed. From a recently discovered collection that has not seen the light of day for over 70 years!

In part:

"…I intend to hasten Back to Stonebridge on Wednesday afternoon between three & four and if there be anything you wish to say to me on that day please to come there - but at any rate I think it would be well that you should come to Birmingham on Thursday morning, and I think you had better call at the Stork at about half past one. Please also to appoint Mr. Dumington be there at the same time: and request him to bring with him any such memoranda or papers as would assist his [illegible] in regard to the value either of the loan generally, or of the machinery claimed by Mr. Burr, or of the mixed machinery admitted to belong & the mortgages. Of this latter I have never yet I think seen any valuation and I should be glad if a rough approximation estimate of it could be framed before we meet…"

William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) was a British statesman and Liberal politician, known affectionately by his supporters as "The People's William" or the "G.O.M." ("Grand Old Man"). In a career lasting over 60 years, he served for 12 years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spread over four terms beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894. He also served over 12 years as Chancellor of the Exchequer.

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
