William F. Hopson Most Beautiful Bookplate Ever Signed & Remarqued ft. Handwritten Inscription from Designer
Signed bookplate
A pair of two engraved bookplates, one rare hand-colored and one traditional ink, printed by William F. Hopson (1849-1935). Measuring 7.5" x 11.25" and 7" x 10", respectively, [Columbus, OH], dated 1903. Signed by the engraver on the hand-colored example as "Wm. F. Hopson/ 1903" with a small remarque depicting a rider on a horse, and again to the lower right of the ink version. The latter features an additional signature from the bookplate's designer, Mary E. Rath-Merrill, with an inscription in her hand at bottom right corner: "To the Allied Bazaar with compliments/ M.E.R.M./ 28 May 1916". Exhibits evident surface creasing and bumping to corners; scattered markings, not affecting illustrations or text. Otherwise, very good.

Together with a 5.25" x 6.5" printed pamphlet titled "Key of the Memorial Gift Book-Plate for Ohio Alcove in American Library at Manila, P.I." The booklet offers important contextual information on the symbolism of the design and its intended use at the American Library at Manila. The bookplate itself, illustrated by Rath-Merrill, was presented to the Columbus chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1902. Its purpose was to act as a gift to Manila's American Library, marking the ownership its books and as a mean of fundraising through the sale of proofs signed by the creators.
