Description:

Yeats William

Autograph letter signed, "WB Yeats", one page, 4.5" x 7" on grey stationery stock, [1907]. To [Sir Hugh] Lane, Lady Augustus Gregory’s nephew, who was a picture-dealer whose career was of mythological importance to Yeats.

In part: “I am only passing through on my way to London so cannot see you this time. I have to go over for a few days. I wanted to tell you how indignant I find our Court [Plunkett] affair.”

Lane, a gifted, arrogant man, planned to give his great collection of 39 French Impressionist paintings to the Dublin Municipal Gallery of Modem Art in 1913, on condition that a gallery be built to show them. When the gallery was not built, Lane, in anger, lent them to the National Gallery in London, and when he died in 1915 both institutions claimed them. Yeats entered the quarrel in 1913 because he thought that a splendid act, an aristocratic gesture, on Lane’s part, had been spumed by a vulgar Dublin. Many of the poems in Yeats’s "Responsibilities" (1914) were inspired by the Lane controversy, which became extraordinarily bitter. It marked a new phase in the relation between Yeats and Ireland.
