Cody William

William "Buffalo Bill" Cody signature on a calling card

Calling card signed by American frontiersman William Frederick Cody (1846-1917) as "W.F. Cody / 'Buffalo Bill' / 1895". Bold and dark signature. Expected light surface wear. American flag sawtooth edge stickers adhered to corners recto where card was once mounted in a scrapbook, otherwise very good to near fine. Cream colored stock card with rounded corners measures 3.5" x 1.875".

"Buffalo Bill" Cody's real life experiences informed his incredibly popular "Buffalo Bill's Wild West" show. This colorful and rollicksome traveling circus featured Cowboys, Indians, Bandits, and other motley characters. Performers like Sitting Bull and Calamity Jane reenacted famous events, staged stunts and tricks, raced on horseback, and circled their Conestoga wagons to the dazzled delight of American and European crowds.

Before he was an entrepreneurial showman, Cody served as a Union soldier in the Civil War, Pony Express rider, scout, Indian fighter, and professional hunter. Cody allegedly earned his moniker "Buffalo Bill" by the ease with which he slayed thousands of the beasts of the Plains. Cody was seldom seen without "Lucrezia Borgia", his Springfield Model 1866 rifle.

Around the time he signed this card, Cody was founding the city of Cody in the northwestern Wyoming Territory. Cody had significant land holdings and cattle ranches in Nebraska and Wyoming Territory. Cody's TE Ranch offered visitors big game hunting, eco-tourism, and hospitality.

A bold autograph from the man who mythologized the Wild West!
