Description:

Blount William

William Blount, Constitution Signer, Large Signature

Paper fragment signed by Constitution Signer William Blount (1749-1800) as "Wm. Blount." The enormous signature is exactly the same as how it appeared on the U.S. Constitution, and measures 4.25" x 1.125" alone. Light toning and expected paper folds, else near fine.  Laid down on paper slip measuring 4.5" x 2.75" overall.

William Blount was one of three North Carolina delegates to sign the U.S. Constitution, and one of the state's five delegates attending the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. Blount's name appears first in the list of North Carolina representatives to sign the U.S. Constitution, above those of Richard Dobbs Spaight (1758-1802) and Hugh Williamson (1735-1819).

As his rather grandiose signature suggests, Blount was a passionate and controversial figure. A Patriot, he served as a paymaster during the Revolutionary War. Over his 20-year-long political career, he would represent both North Carolina and Tennessee. Blount and his family engaged in aggressive land speculation in the Southwest Territory (modern day Tennessee) in the 1780s and 90s. Faced with plummeting land values and overextended credit, Blount plotted with Great Britain to wrest neighboring lands in Louisiana Territory away from Spain, thus artificially inflating the real estate market. The so-called "Blount Conspiracy" was discovered in 1797 and led to his impeachment from the U.S. Senate. Nevertheless, Blount remained extremely popular in his home state of Tennessee until his death three years later.

A huge signature by Constitution Signer and scoundrel William Blount!
