Description:

Will Rogers PSA NM-MT 8 Signed 1932 "Olympic Stadium" FDC

A "Commemorating / Xth Olympic Games / Los Angeles, Calif. / July 30 to August 14, 1932 /Olympic Stadium / in / Olympic Park" First Day Cover, signed by American humorist Will Rogers (1879-1935) as "Will Rogers" along a vertical orientation at center. Postmarked at Arcade Station, Los Angeles, California on June 15, 1932. Featuring a monochrome cachet depicting the Olympic Stadium (today the L.A. Coliseum, opened in 1923) at left, and a canceled Olympic-themed stamp officially issued that day: a blue U.S. 5-cent discus thrower. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM-MT 8. Light expected wear, else near fine. The envelope measures 6.5" x 3.625" while the overall size of the slab is 9.5" x 4.5."

In addition to being one of early-twentieth-century America's most beloved entertainers, Will Rogers was also one of the most dedicated boosters of the 1932 Summer Olympics (X Olympiad) held in Los Angeles, California from July 30 - August 14, 1932. Rogers was heavily involved in promoting the upcoming Olympic Games, not an easy task to achieve during the first years of the Great Depression. In a May 1932 radio broadcast lobbying for Olympics attendance, Rogers quipped, "We want you to come play with us this summer. Not all summer, but as long as your money lasts. Nobody can make a dollar, so come over and see your boy make a record…if an athlete can come thousands of miles just to perspire for his country, you can certainly come and sit in the shade and watch him." Rogers appeared in another radio appeal later that summer, in July 1932, called "Come to the Olympics." Rogers's advocacy at least partly explains why an estimated 1.25 million spectators later attended the Games, and why the organizing body is believed to have made a seven-figure profit during a world-wide economic downturn!
