Description:

Durant Will

1p ALS on "Will Durant, Lake Hill, N.Y." letterhead inscribed overall and signed by American philosopher Will Durant (1885-1981) as "Will Durant" in the lower right corner. In near fine condition with expected paper folds. Page measures 6.5" x 8.75".

Will Durant apologized to an associate of birth control expert Dr. Abraham Stone named "Miss Wolinski" for his inability to attend an upcoming lecture. On September 17, 1941 from his home in Lake Hill, New York, he wrote: "It is mighty nice of you and Dr. Stone to excuse me so graciously … I am ashamed that I can't be with you on the evening of the testimonial, and I have sent Dr. Stone a letter which expresses my feelings mildly. If you run another series place let me know, and I will see to it that I can share in it."

Durant also provided Miss Wolinski with his travel itinerary, giving us an idea of the popular philosopher's busy speaking schedule throughout the Midwest in November and December 1941. Durant hoped that Dr. Stone would maintain contact with "Colston Leigh". William Colston Leigh, Sr. (1901-1992) administrated the prestigious speakers' agency W. Colston Leigh Bureau out of Somerville, New Jersey, managing talent including Will Durant, Eleanor Roosevelt, Indira Gandhi, and others.

Will Durant, along with his wife and colleague Ariel Durant (1898-1981), are credited with popularizing the study of philosophy in the twentieth century. The husband and wife pair co-wrote the 11-volume Story of Civilization between 1935-1975, which provided a comprehensive and wholistic view of the history of ideas.

Dr. Abraham Stone (1890-1959) was one half of another productive husband and wife team. With wife Dr. Hannah Stone (1894-1941), Stone researched and advocated birth control, family planning, marriage and sex counseling.

Like so many other Progressive thinkers of this era, Will Durant and Dr. Abraham Stone believed in humanity's limitless potential. The friends and colleagues championed the right of all to improve their physical and spiritual condition through continuing education and access to social and medical aids. Birth control activist Margaret Sanger was a mutual friend.
