Wilbur Wright & King Alfonso XIII Vintage Sepia Reproduction of Signed Photo, April 1910
Photograph
A vintage sepia-colored gelatin silver photograph showing American aviator Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) in a leather jacket and tweed cap at left, and King Alfonso XIII of Spain (1886-1941) in a three-piece suit and Fedora at right, seated at the controls of the Wright Model A Flyer. A reproduction of Wilbur Wright's signature is printed at upper right along the top edge. The photographic print is mounted on a piece of chipboard. The original paper backing is inscribed and dated as: "To A. Estorin [?] / April 1910" along the back. Expected wear including moderate to heavy silvering, scattered loss, and wrinkles. The paper backing is toned and chipped. Else good. 8" x 6." Ex-Burchard Galleries, Inc. (St. Petersburg, Florida), purchased June 18, 2022.

The original photograph of Wilbur Wright and King Alfonso XIII of Spain was taken by German-born photographer Philipp Kester (1873-1958) in Pau, France in 1909. In February-March 1909, Wilbur undertook a series of training flights with three French student pilots at Pau. King Alfonso was extremely interested in aviation and purportedly wanted to become the first reigning monarch to pilot his own airplane. Contemporary newspapers were abuzz with rumors that King Alfonso would take lessons with Wilbur, which were categorically denied by Wright.
