Description:

Whitey Bulger ALS "gang life has appeal but its only temporary..."

2pp, measuring 8.5" x 11", [Sumterville, Florida], dated September 12, 2016. Addressed to a correspondent named Clint, signed "Jim Bulger 1428AZ." Written from Coleman II United States Penitentiary. It is unknown exactly who Bulger is writing to, but he gives numerous details of his opinions on gang life, his relationship with Catherine Greig, and his interest in politics. The letter has a photocopied image of Bulger on verso, which he claims was taken upon his arrival at Leavenworth. The letter has flattened mail folds and a small amount of soiling at the top edge. With a bold, clear signature. Reading in part, including all original grammatical and spelling errors:

"…You were correct in saying how gang life has appeal but its only temporary and when the chips are down you find out all to late that some of the 'Loud Talkers' will hang friends rather than go to jail - not only that they will lie to please the Law. Solution - Distance and get closer to your family they suffer with you and sadly because of us. Distance is best let the dust settle and soon your forgotten. I should have done that but didn’t want to let my friends down - they were glad to have me as their Get Out of Jail card…They all free and Catherine will do more time than any one of them. My blood boils when I think of how she has been treated hard to get it out of my head. Did I send you 3 page article on how Prosecutor had Judge give Catherine the Record Sentence in years in prison than anyone else in VA…We write each other every day - I'm never lost for words in here…We both have interest in Pre-Election - I want to see President who strengthens the Military, funds NASA & keeps us out of these small proxy wars…"

James Joseph "Whitey" Bulger (1929-2018) was an Irish-American crime boss who led the Winter Hill Gang in Somerville, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. Bulger became entangled in the Boston criminal underworld at a young age, joining the "Shamrocks" street gang at the age of 14. He got involved in the Killeen-Mullen mob war in the early 1970s, and by 1972, he and the Mullens were in control of South Boston. Bulger successfully ran his organized crime operation until 1994, when the FBI built a case to arrest him under the RICO Act, and he fled Boston on December 23, 1994. In 1999, he was placed on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, and remained on the loose for twelve more years. He was finally arrested in June 2001, having been cornered in Santa Monica, California with his girlfriend Catherine Greig. He was convicted of 19 murders, racketeering, extortion, narcotics distribution, and conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, and money laundering, and was sentenced to life in prison. In September 2014, Bulger was placed in the Coleman II United States Penitentiary. On October 30, 2018, he was murdered by another inmate just hours after being transferred to Hazelton Penitentiary.
