Wernher von Braun Signed Photo as NASA Director w/ TLS From Chief of Public Affairs
Signed photograph
An official portrait photograph of Dr. Wernher von Braun as Directior of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, originally captured by notable photographer Louis Fabian Bachrach Jr. 1p, measuring 5" x 7", Huntsville, AL, ca. 1964. Signed and inscribed along bottom margin: "To John S. Paxton/ Best wishes/ Wernher von Braun", featuring copyright backstamp on verso. Accompanied by a letter from Foster Haley, Deputy Chief of Public Affairs, dated November 20, 1964. Within, he addresses the photo's intended recipient, stating that von Braun was "honored and flattered to be able to comply" with the request. Photo exhibits moderate creasing and curled edges, with slight feathering to inscription. Letter features singular vertical fold near right side margin. Otherwise a very good pairing. Boldly signed!

Wernher von Braun (1912-1977) was a German-American aerospace engineer and space architect. As a young man, von Braun worked in Nazi Germany's rocket development program, helping to design and co-develop the V-2 rocket during World War II. Following the war, he was secretly moved to the United States along with 1,600 other German scientists, engineers, and technicians. By 1960, his group had assimilated into NASA, where he served as director of the newly formed Marshall Space Flight Center. In this position, von Braun would serve as a chief architect of the Saturn V super heavy-lift launch vehicle that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon.
