Watergate
Washington, DC, ca. 1973-1974
Watergate: Jaworski & Dash TLS Group!
TLS

Two Typed Letters Signed (TLS) relating to the Watergate investigation, each on official government letterhead and addressed to the same correspondent, Michael R. Patterson of Brooklyn, New York. Both letters concern autograph requests and are signed by two central legal figures in the Watergate proceedings. Some toning and foxing, else fine. Authenticated by JSA, with holograms on versos. Measures 8" x 10.5".

1.) Samuel Dash TLS, August 6, 1973. On official United States Senate – Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities letterhead (the Senate Watergate Committee), dated August 6, 1973, and signed in bold blue ink, "Samuel Dash," as Chief Counsel.

Dash acknowledges Patterson's July 30th letter and responds to a request for an autographed photograph. He explains that due to the large number of such requests and the prohibitive expense involved, he cannot provide a photograph, adding: "I hope my signature at the bottom of this letter will suffice."

The letter dates to the height of the nationally televised Watergate hearings, during which Dash served as Chief Counsel and became widely known for his questioning of witnesses before Chairman Sam Ervin's committee.

2.) Leon Jaworski TLS, April 17, 1974. On official Watergate Special Prosecution Force – United States Department of Justice letterhead, dated April 17, 1974, and signed, "Leon Jaworski," as
Special Prosecutor.

Jaworski similarly responds to Patterson, stating: "I am sorry there are no photographs available; however, I hope that my signature on this letter will serve as an autograph for your collection."

This letter was written during one of the most consequential phases of the Watergate crisis, just months before President Nixon's resignation, while Jaworski was leading the Special Prosecution Force pursuing the investigation and the Supreme Court case United States v. Nixon.

Samuel Dash, as Chief Counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee, played a prominent public role in the televised hearings of 1973 that exposed abuses of executive power and reshaped American political accountability. Leon Jaworski succeeded Archibald Cox as Special Prosecutor and pursued the legal battle that ultimately led to the release of the White House tapes and the unraveling of the Nixon presidency.

Together, these letters represent two complementary arms of the Watergate investigation: congressional oversight and criminal prosecution. Signed examples from both men—especially on official letterhead from the Select Committee and the Watergate Special Prosecution Force—form a cohesive and historically resonant pairing tied directly to one of the defining constitutional crises in American history.
