Washington Irving, U.S. Minister to Spain, ALS

1p bifold ALS on "Legacion de los Estados Unidos en Espana" letterhead signed by U.S. Minister to Spain Washington Irving (1783-1859) as "Washington Irving" in the lower right corner of the first page. The second and third pages are blank, and docket information appears on the fourth page. In very good condition. Expected horizontal and vertical folds, some well-worn and with minor closed tears not affecting text. Overall toning and scattered discoloration. Each page measures 8" x 6.5".

This December 27, 1844 letter from the U.S. Legation in Madrid was addressed to the U.S. Consul of Bilbao. (A legation refers to the diplomatic office directly below that of the Embassy, and is headed by a Minister rather than an Ambassador.) Inscribed in a secretarial hand and signed by Irving, the letter requested information about the economic relations between the two countries: "It is desirable that this Legation be first in possession of the most accurate and detailed information of the commerce between the United States and Spain during the present year of 1844."

Washington Irving, more celebrated as a writer than a diplomat, served as U.S. Minister to Spain between 1842-1846 after his appointment by 10th U.S. President John Tyler. At this time, Spain was wracked by political unrest after the ascension of teenaged Queen Isabella II. Economic issues of the day would have concerned the slave trade, as well as American trade with Spanish colonies like Cuba. Irving incorporated some of his Spanish experiences into travel writing.
