Description:

Washington Has Been Accused of Lying!

[WASHINGTON, George]. Autograph Letter Signed, “Lawr. Washington", 4pp, on a bifold sheet with integral address leaf, 7.75” x 9.75”, Campbellton, June 1, 1834. Expected mailing folds with some paper loss and tearing at edges; scattered areas of toning and soiling; ink lightly faded but legible; else, very good condition. Included is a typescript of this letter on stationery of the Lincoln Library, Shippenburg, Pennsylvania.

Lawrence Washington (1791-1875) married his 5th cousin, Sarah Tayloe (1800-1886), daughter of William Augustine Washington (1757-1810), whose father, Augustine was George Washington’s half-brother. Lawrence, who served as a Virginia State Senator, lived in Campbellton Farm, Westmoreland County, Virginia, which he purchased in 1830.

Washington is angry about a letter he has just received from a Mr. Bayard. He quotes an extract from the letter to William F. Taleofero, then writes, in part, “This attempt on the part of Mr. Bayard to excuse, or extenuate his own unaccountable conduct by casting censure on me is to say the least of it is both unkind & ungenerous. You will perceive that in a part of the extract he uses this language, ‘Other considerations which I have stated to Mr. Taleofero impressed me with a confident belief that Mr. W would not decline a request when there could be no risque of loss’ T. -- Now the object of this letter, is to ask as a favour, (if it will violate no confidence on your part) that you will inform me particularly what are the ‘other considerations’ which Mr. B states induced ‘a confident belief’ that I would join him in the bond."

Washington continues, “I unhesitatingly & positively declare, that I did not, directly, or indirectly, by word, act, or deed, give Mr. Bayard the slightest reason to believe that I would under any circumstances become his security as guardian of his grand daughter...In regard to my becoming his security for his administration on the estate of WAW [William Augustine Washington], it is scarcely necessary to say that the two cases are so entirely dissimilar, as to make it not a little surprising that he should have that subject in his letter...”
