During the Civil War, James E. Campbell (1843-1924) fought in the Union Army as a member of the Mississippi Squadron (1863-1864). A Democrat, he served as Governor of Ohio from 1890-1892. In 1920, Campbell was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. On October 4, 1920, the 98th anniversary of the birth of Ohioan and 19th Pres. Pres. Rutherford B. Hayes, both 1920 presidential candidates, the Democrat, Ohio Governor James M. Cox, and the Republican, Ohio Senator Warren G. Harding, shared the same platform at the Hayes family home at Spiegel Grove, near Fremont, Ohio, to unveil a memorial tablet in honor of Sandusky County soldiers who lost their lives in war. Former Gov. James E. Campbell presided over the event.

Handwritten letters of Harding as President are rare. In the past 25 years, only six Harding presidential ALsS have appeared at major public auctions, averaging over $10,000 each.
