Warren Harding Rare ALS as President Plus TLS to Attorney General Daugherty, PSA COA
ALS

A pair of two letters signed by Warren Harding as President to Attorney General Harry Daugherty, including one typed and another handwritten. 2p, Washington, D.C., ca. February 1922. Exhibits light toning and handling marks throughout. Minor soiling present to Harding's signature on the typed letter. Overall, very good. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from PSA that covers both items.

The lot includes:

1.) 1p autographed letter signed "WGH" on White House letterhead, 5" x 8", Washington, D.C., undated [ca. February 1922]. Harding writes to General [Harry M.] Daugherty in full: "The bearer is I. H. Miller, an old school friend of Caledonia, now a resident of California. I talked to you concerning him over the phone. I would be glad to have him made Warden of the penitentiary at McNeil's Island."

2.) 1p typed letter signed "Warren G. Harding" on White House letterhead, 7" x 8.75", Washington, D.C., February 24, 1922. As a follow up to the first letter to Daugherty, the President writes: "I have yours of February 23rd making inquiry concerning the nomination of the Penitentiary Warden at McNeil's Island. I think perhaps we had better give the appointment to the candidate proposed by Senator Poindexter. I will be glad to have you tender the Deputy Wardenship to Mr. Miller. I do not know a better solution."

Harry M. Daugherty (1860-1941) was a key Republican insider from Ohio best remembered for his service as U. S. Attorney General during the Harding and Coolidge administrations, as well as for his involvement in the Teapot Dome Scandal. He had previously worked as Harding's campaign manager during the 1920 Republican National Convention, and was named attorney general following their successful run for the presidency. In that capacity, Daugherty was instrumental in winning presidential pardons for jailed anti-war dissidents such as Eugene V. Debs. Twice the subject of federal corruption investigations, Daugherty was forced in 1924 to resign his post as attorney general by Coolidge.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
