This Harris & Ewing Studio portrait was taken in Washington, D.C. circa 1920. Harding is depicted in left-facing profile, wearing a tailored suit, stiff collared shirt, and tie pin.

George W. Harris and Martha Ewing opened their photo studio in Washington, D.C. in 1905. The firm, well-known for its portraits, reached its peak in the 1930s, managing over 100 employees, five studios, and a news service. Numerous twentieth-century presidents were photographed by the studio, including Taft, Wilson, and Harding.

Warren G. Harding was a newspaper editor and aspiring politician who served as Ohio Lieutenant Governor and Senator before winning the landslide 1920 presidential election. Harding was extremely popular during his 30-month-long presidential term. After Harding's fatal heart attack in August 1923, Vice President "Silent Cal" Calvin Coolidge assumed the presidency.

Harding's dedicatee might have been William A. Temple, the postmaster of Westboro, Massachusetts. Temple's Senate confirmation records date from throughout the 1920s.
