Description:

Gerald Ford
Washington DC, December 8, 1966
Warren Commission: Boggs & G. Ford "I do not share your view that additional investigation is now called for." JSA Authentication
TLS

Two Typed Letters Signed (TLS), each on official Congress of the United States, House of Representatives letterhead, addressed to Michael R. Patterson of Brooklyn, New York, concerning public criticism and continued defense of the Warren Commission's findings.

Gerald R. Ford TLS, dated December 8, 1966, on Office of the Minority Leader letterhead, Washington, D.C., signed in blue ink "Gerald Ford." In the letter, Ford responds directly to concerns about alleged "loop holes and mistakes" in the Warren Commission's testimony and conclusions, stating that he does not share the view that further investigation is warranted.

Hale Boggs TLS, dated October 27, 1967, on House of Representatives letterhead, Washington, D.C., signed in blue ink "Hale Boggs, M.C." Boggs outlines the composition of the Warren Commission—including Chief Justice Earl Warren, Senator Richard B. Russell, Senator John Sherman Cooper, Congressman Gerald R. Ford, Allen W. Dulles, John J. McCloy, and himself—and strongly affirms the thoroughness of the Commission's work.

Both letters exhibit standard mailing folds, two file punch holes at left margin, and scattered foxing and toning consistent with age and office retention. Signatures remain clear and well-defined. Both letters have been authenticated by JSA, and feature the hologram on the verso. Measures 8" x 10.5".

Following the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the Warren Commission was established to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. Congressman Gerald R. Ford served as a member of the Commission, while Hale Boggs was also appointed as one of its seven members. By 1966–1967, growing public skepticis, fueled by books and media criticism, prompted continued correspondence between citizens and Commission members.

In these letters, both Ford and Boggs reaffirm their confidence in the Commission's exhaustive investigation, referencing the 26 published volumes of testimony and the nearly 900-page final report. The correspondence captures a critical transitional period when debate over the Warren Report was intensifying, making these documents tangible artifacts of the evolving national conversation surrounding one of the most consequential investigations in American history.
