Description:

Warren Burger Court
[Washington, DC], n.d. but ca. 1976
Warren Burger Court Justices in Bicentennial Supreme Court Booklet, 7 Live Sigs., With JSA LOA
Signed Booklet

A vintage booklet entitled "The Supreme Court of the United States," no stated publisher but probably the Government Printing Office. N.d. but ca. 1976. [Washington, D.C.] The inset of the booklet, p. 9-12, features profiles of all sitting members of the Warren Burger Court, and is signed by seven of them with live signatures, and two of them with autopen. Live signatures include those of: Warren E. Burger; William J. Brennan, Jr.; Potter Stewart; Byron R. White; Harry A. Blackmun; Lewis F. Powell, Jr.; and John P. Stevens. Autopen signatures include those of Thurgood Marshall and William H. Rehnquist. With stapled binding. Some minor condition issues affect the signatures, which will be elaborated below. Expected light surface wear but mostly clean within. 20pp. 6" x 9." Accompanied by a JSA Letter of Authenticity, submission number W3166991, dated February 9, 2026.

The booklet provides basic information about the history and organization of the U.S. Supreme Court, in addition to offering a brief summary of landmark cases; an analysis of the symbolic function of the Court and its architecture; and an overview of visitor logistics. With black and white illustrations interspersed within the text.

The signatures are in order of appearance, which also reflects the chronological order of presidential appointment:

- Chief Justice Warren Burger, signed as "Warren E Burger" at the bottom right corner of p. 9. A few letters of the signature are slightly smeared, but otherwise dark, bold, and legible.

- Associate Justice William J. Brennan, Jr., signed as "Wm J Brennan Jr" at the top right corner of p. 10.

- Associate Justice Potter Stewart, signed as "Potter Stewart" at the center left corner of p. 10.

- Associate Justice Byron R. White, signed as "Byron R White" at the bottom right corner of p. 10. Slightly streaky signature.

- Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall, an autopen signature as "Thurgood Marshall" at the top left corner of p. 11.

- Associate Justice Harry A. Blackmun, signed as "Harry A. Blackmun" at the center right corner of p. 11. Slightly streaky signature with one smeared letter.

- Associate Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr., signed as "Lewis F. Powell, Jr." at the bottom left corner of p. 11.

- Associate Justice William H. Rehnquist, an autopen signature as "William H Rehnquist" at the top right corner of p. 12.

- Associate Justice John P. Stevens, signed as "John Paul Stevens" at the bottom left corner of p. 12. Slightly streaky signature.

15th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court Warren Burger (1907-1995) led the court between 1969-1986. Burger's court decisions were not as liberal as his predecessor's, Earl Warren, nor as conservative as his successor's, William Rehnquist. In this way, Burger's court is often viewed as transitional.
