1pp printed broadside announcing mandatory meeting of the "Republican Greens, First Company Orders. YOU will attend a Meeting of the Company, without arms, at Mr. Dooley's, on Wednesday evening ... to take into consideration the propriety of volunteering or standing the draft ... " At top, a patriotic print depicts a "Republican Green" officer facing Columbia in draperies and a helmet. The figure stands next to an American flag and drum, and brandishes a staff topped with a Phrygian cap. Two ribbon pennants encircling the print are inscribed: "We will conquer or die in thy defence" [sic] and "Where Liberty dwells there is my country". Docket information appears verso. In near fine condition with expected folds, several tiny holes found along creases, and one small repaired tear at top. Broadside measures 6.125" x 7.875".

The "Republican Greens", also known as the "Irish Greens", was a band of volunteer infantry and riflemen that organized around the turn of the nineteenth century in New York City. They were called the "Greens" because most of their members were of Irish heritage, and they also wore a uniform comprised of a light green coat, white pants, and a black leather helmet. In 1813 the "Republican Greens" participated in the invasion of Canada and were posted along the Niagara frontier.

The "Republican Greens" were commanded by Francis McClure, who wrote a letter to 3rd U.S. President Thomas Jefferson in 1808 describing his organization: "I am an Irishman by birth but an American in Sentiment and have resided in this City [New York City] thirteen years ... In '99 a military company was raised here called the 'Republican Greens' and I appointed the Junior Officer, shortly after the Capn died, the Lieut left the State and I succeeded to the Command, since which by my personal exertions the encrease in numbers has been so great, that a few months ago the Governor organized them in a Battalion, to be called 'The first Battalion of Republican Green Rifle Men' and I of course hold a Commission as Major ... " (This letter is now housed in the National Archives).

In early May 1812, McClure's soldiers and officers are ordered to report by Commandant "P.M'Grath, O.S." McGrath appears to be listed among heroic captains of Irish heritage that distinguished themselves during the War of 1812. In the History of the State of New York by state historian Alexander Flick published in 1935, one Captain McGrath merited mentioning on page 21.

The United States declared war on Great Britain in June 1812, just one month after this broadside called the "Republican Greens" to convene at Mr. Dooley's. The meeting, discussing the pros and cons of volunteering versus conscription, was thus quite timely.

An inspiring War of 1812 broadside with patriotic print!
