Cornelis Glen was a merchant, investor, and real estate trader. His home in Albany was served by six slaves. His business interests were diverse; he was involved in real estate and with the Albany government. Glen's enterprises brought him conflict with the revolutionaries during the late 1770s, although in the early days of the conflict he lent supplies and materials to the cause. By July 1778, Glen was arrested for his refusal to take the oath of allegiance and was threatened banishment to the British lines. He later took the oath and did receive a land bounty right for service in conjunction with the city regiment of the Albany County militia. In 1792, Glen was elected one of the first directors of the Bank of Albany.

Henry Van Schaack (1733-1823) was a prominent western Massachusetts Federalist and fur trader who forged business relationships with British officials. During the Seven Years War, he was an officer in a New York Regiment, serving with distinction at Lake George and Niagara. He also held a number of administrative positions within the New York forces. Van Schaack served as Albany's postmaster from 1757 to 1771. During that time, he settled in Albany and took over his ailing father-in-law's farm, and was emerging as an Albany-based conduit for goods and products between London and the Great Lakes outposts.
