Description:

Walter Chrysler Pair of TLS to Walter Jr. Signed "Dad"

A pair of two typed letters from automotive pioneer Walter Chrysler (1875-1940) to his oldest son, Walter Jr. (1909-1988), while he was away at school in Connecticut. Both have been affectionately signed as "Dad" at conclusion and are accompanied by their original transmittal envelopes. The first, dated May 16, 1925, offers an intimate look into Chrysler's relationship with his son, encouraging him in his studies and to diversify his interests, stating "I am sure you are working hard and are determined to come out on top- which you are." The second, dated October 22, 1926, gives an update on his two of Chrysler's other children, Thelma Irene Chrysler and John "Jack" Forker Chrysler, as well as advises the seventeen-year-old Walter Jr. to think critically about his recent expenses. Features expected letter folds, with light toning and scattered markings throughout. A very good pairing overall.

Walter P. Chrysler Sr. was an American automotive industry executive who became the founder of the American Chrysler Corporation in 1925. In addition to his namesake car company, Plymouth and DeSoto marques were created, and in 1928 Chrysler purchased Dodge Brothers and renamed it Dodge. That same year he financed the construction of the Chrysler Building in New York City, which was completed in 1930.

Walter Chrysler Jr. was a notable art collector, museum benefactor, and collector of other objects such as stamps, rare books, and glassworks. After leaving Dartmouth at the end of his junior year, Chrysler Jr. would embark on a grand tour of Europe during which time he met such artists as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Henri Matisse. He would attend the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut during his youth, where he is said to have begun his art collection.
