Walter Chrysler, Jr. Signed Check Dating From His Dartmouth College Days

A check engrossed by Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. (1909-1988), the heir of the Chrysler automotive empire, signed by him as "Walter P Chrysler, Jr." on the signature line. Also endorsed in Chrysler, Jr.'s hand with the date, "Feb. 9, 1931," the name of the bank the money was to be drawn from, "Central Hanover Bank + Trust Co.," the amount in question, $2, and the merchant to be paid, "The Chieftain Café." Bearing the usual clerical and cancellation marks including punch-out holes, stamps, and pencil inscriptions. A few letters of Chrysler, Jr.'s signature are slightly feathered. Else crisp and near fine. 8.25" x 3.375."

Walter Chrysler, Jr. attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire from his freshman year through his junior year. An advertisement for "The Chieftain Café" appears in a 1931 copy of "The Aegis," the Dartmouth College yearbook. The restaurant touted its "Excellent Cuisine Served in the Most Agreeable Atmosphere."

Chrysler, Jr. left Dartmouth without graduating in June 1931 to embark on a life-changing art collecting and buying trip. In Paris, Chrysler, Jr. rubbed elbows with Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Georges Braque and other modern artists whose works he would later exhibit in his art gallery "The Cheshire," opened on the ground floor of his father's Chrysler Building in 1932. Chrysler, Jr. continued to be deeply involved in the art world for the rest of his life. He proved instrumental to the founding of the Modern Museum of Art in New York City, and his private collection later became the nucleus of the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia.

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
